How To Clean A Hermit Crabs Aquarium in 5 Easy Steps

Hermit crabs are one of the most enjoyable exotic pets to have

. They are relatively clean and do not take a great deal of looking after. Having said this, your hermit crab tank will get dirty from time to time and will need a spring clean, just as our houses would. So with this in mind I am going to explain how to clean a hermit crabs aquarium in 5 easy steps

Step 1)

The first thing that you need to do when thinking about how to clean a hermit crabs aquarium is to remove the hermit crabs from the tank. Make sure that you put them in a smooth sided plastic container with high sides (do not put a lid on) the reason that it has to be high sided is that these little critters are fantastic climbers and if you turn your back on them you will be on your hands and knees playing "hunt the Hermit crab" before you know it! Also do not put anything in their holding area that they can climb because to put it quite simply, they can and will!

Step 2)

Take all the accessories out of the tank and give them a clean using a clean cloth and warm water. Do not use soap as this could have a reaction with the crabs.

Step 3)

Get a small scoop and remove all the debris from the sand and/or gravel such as old food and crab poop top up sand and gravel if necessary.

Step 4)

This should be done around once a month or if the aquarium is particularly dirty. Remove all the sand and gravel from the tank and disinfect the inside of the walls of the aquarium by using a mild solution of warm water and household vinegar. This acts as a de sanitizing agent and will kill germs. When the inside has been done, rinse in warm water and then wash the outside of the tank (again no soap or chemicals) in warm water only. Dry thoroughly using a clean dry cloth or paper towel.

Step 5)

Place the newly cleaned accessories back in the tank after topping up the sand and gravel and place the Hermit crabs back in their nice clean environment.

Knowing how to clean a hermit crabs aquarium is not rocket science and should only take you around half an hour to complete the task from start to finish. It may only need doing around once every week, but this does depend on the amount of crabs that you have. (More crabs = more mess) My advice would be to keep an eye on your tank and if it looks like it is getting a little dirty then give it a clean.

At the end of the day nobody likes to live in a messy environment and this is the same for the hermit crab. Knowing how to clean a hermit crabs aquarium will keep your crabs happy and healthy and you will find that you will get a lot more enjoyment out of them in the long term!
