How To Clean A Men's Silk Tie
Silk ties are a treasure and as such they must be taken a good care of
. Since they are expensive and quite exclusive, they add these same characteristics to the man wearing them. They are also very hard to find in a pure form, so if you have managed to - keep your eyes open and try not to get it dirty, because you have yourself a real preciousness. Cherish you tie and care for it, because you will most definitely not want it to look unkempt, because by wearing it you will look like this too.
As an owner of such a tie, you should keep in mind the fact that it must be really cared for. All risky situations that can dirty and/or spot your tie should be avoided. You might wonder why you should pay so much attention to you tie. It is almost impossible to be cleaned. It's as simple as that. However, if you have managed to harm the gentle fabric of your necktie, you should act immediately and start following these guidelines for cleaning a man's silk tie:
1. Act immediately. You should be as fast as possible, because otherwise you risk staining your tie for an eternity. Once the spot's dried up and totally absorbed into the tie it cannot be cleaned.
2. Sprinkle corn starch or talcum powder over the stain. You should have something to absorb the liquid instead of the fabric. If you cannot carry such things around with you, ask your wife, girlfriend or assistant to do it.
3. Use paper towel to brush away the talcum powder or the starch off the tie.
4. If it didn't work go to the dry cleaner's. However, you should know that silk ties are not meant to be dry-cleaned; hence you will almost definitely have it stained from the chemicals. You might want to buy a new tie instead.
If all of this, and especially the conclusion, make you want to get rid of all the silk ties in your wardrobe, you might want to start taking precautions.
1. First you should fabric pre-treatment spray on your tie before having it exposed. This will make it stain-retardant. Such sprays are available in many forms and packages. Be sure to ask the shopkeeper about which specific product is best suited for your type of silk. Some sprays might harm the fabric, depending on the type of dye used on it and the way it was manufactured.
2. You shouldn't let it go near water (especially), unprotected before food and near babies. Attach a napkin to your collar when eating and take the tie off when caring for a baby. When washing your hands you can flip the tie to your back; the collar will protect the parts that are left on your front.
3. Loosely roll your ties when storing them. This way you won't risk having your tie wrinkled or with creases left from hanging. These can prove to be as hard to get rid of as a stain.
If you have ever thought whether you should buy an expensive silk tie or cheaper one and chose the silk, think again. If you don't have the nerves to take care of it, or the finances to buy silk ties only, you should better skip trying to look too expensive for your capabilities. Try to prove class with your cufflinks for example. With them you can be creative even at a cheaper price.
