How To Clean A Sandstone Hearth

There are a number of applications in the home for the attractive and durable material commonly known as sandstone

. One of these applications is as a hearth, which is the name given to the visible part of a fireplace. While any stone was once used for this feature, these days only the strongest and most visually pleasing are given that honour. When sandstone is used in a hearth, however, it is known to collect large deposits of dirt, ash and soot. The only way to keep your stone in its most attractive state is to regularly clean it.

Begin by covering the floor around your sandstone hearth with plastic drop cloths. These will serve two purposes "" the first, to protect the floor from the potentially harmful cleaning products that you will be using, and the second, to collect all of the dirt and debris. You will also need to put on some rubber gloves to protect your skin against the potentially harmful chemicals you will be working with.

Next, you can prepare the trisodium phosphate mixture. Combine a quarter of a cup of trisodium phosphate cleaner and one litre of hot water in a bucket. You will also need to fill a second bucket with cold water for rinsing the sandstone when you are finished.

Take a soft bristled brush and use it to scrub the trisodium phosphate mixture into a small section of sandstone (aim for a square that is around two feet long and two feet wide). Make sure that you effectively scrub off all the dirt, soot and ash from this section. Then, soak a cloth in the clean water and use it to wipe down the cleaned section of sandstone as a rinse.

Move onto the next section of sandstone, making sure that you only work on one small area of stone at a time, until you have cleaned the entire hearth. Remember to rinse each section once you have removed all of the dirt, otherwise it will simply dry back onto the sandstone.

Make sure that you leave the sandstone to air dry completely before placing anything onto its surface. If you are worried about the trisodium phosphate mixture affecting the colour of your stone, test a small amount on an inconspicuous area of the hearth prior to cleaning to see whether any damage occurs. If it does, it is recommended that you find another cleaning product for your sandstone.
