How To Clean And Take Care Of Your Diamond Ring
Like any other investment, it is a good idea to clean your diamond engagement ring
and to maintain it so that it retains its value and its place as a trasured piece of jewelry. However, you can not just use heavy chemicals or just water to clean your engagement ring because this will ruin whatever protective coatings are on the diamond and the ring and decrease the rings value. Consequently, many people have their jewelry cleaned by a professional jeweler two-three times a year. However, it is possible to clean your engagement ring at home; you just need to follow the procedure below and your ring will look like new.
Before you even start to prepare to clean your ring, you should ascertain that it can be cleaned at home. This is important because since you have spent a significant amount of money on the ring, the last thing you want is for it to be ruined. In general, the more ornate and older rings should be taken to a jeweler for cleaning because their settings are morelikely to be weaker and more prone to damage from cleaning on top of that which it might suffer from banges and being worn constantly. Newer engagement rings can be cleaned at home unless they contian a metal or gemstone that may be damaged by cleaning as their setting are stronger. Once you have acertained that you can clean your engagment ring at home and do not need the services of a professional jeweler, you may now prepare your cleaning area and clean your ring.
Your cleaning area should have plenty of room for you to move without risking damaging - or even worse, losing your engagement ring. If you intend to use a sink, it would be a good idea to cover the drain or at least have a sieve under your ring so if you accidentally drop it, it will not be lost forever. In addition to this, keep any heavy chemicals away from your engagement ring and the area you are working because the fumes from those chemicals may damage the rings exterior and any coatings that are on it and the gemstone that is set in it. It would also be a good idea for your work area to be well lit with a towel available.
The first step in cleaning your engagement ring is to remove all hairs, fibers and lint that may be stuck in the prongs of the ring or between the gemstone and its setting. The best way to remove these hairs is with a set of tweezers because they can lock on to the hair much more firmly that your fingers. Following this, you should either rinse your ring in the sink, using the sieve as a holder or by filling up a bowl with water and soaking your engagement ring in the bowl for a short period of time.
Once you soaked your ring, you are ready to clean your ring. It is essential that you be careful when taking this step because any missteps will lead to a damaged rings that is worth less. The cleaning solution should be mostly water with a bit of ammonia (The ratio should be 1:3) and some detergent or a cleaning agent. Do not use chlorine with an engagement ring, and especially with a diamond ring because this will ruin your jewelry and do not use ammonia if your engagement happens to be diamond and a fractured diamond in particular because the ammonia will destroy the fillings and coatings around the stone. At this point, scrub the ring with a soft toothbrush.
Once you are satisfied with the cleaning you have given your jewelry, you may rinse the ring off. You may use running water, but make sure to use the sieve so you dont lose the ring. Alternatively, you may soak your engagement ring in clean water. Following a thorough rinsing which removes all of the soap a well as any grime, muck, ooze or any other kind of embedded gunk from the ring, you should dry it in a towel. This should also polish your
diamond engagement ring as well. At this point, your engagement ring should look like it did when you were first given it.
