How To Clean Leather Furniture

Although leather furniture is elegant and luxurious

, it's very durable. Leather generally lasts at least four times longer than other types of upholstery fabrics. But, even though it can withstand a lot of daily abuse, you can easily ruin leather if you use improper techniques to clean it. Leather needs special care to stay soft and shining like new.

There are several ways that you can prevent permanent damage to your leather furniture. Never place leather near sources of heat, too much heat will cause the leather to become dry and it will eventually start to crack. Don't place the furniture in direct sunlight, UV rays will cause the color of the leather to fade.

Leather is preserved when it's tanned and With normal use, it needs very little care. Dust your furniture once a week with a damp, white cloth. If you use a rag that has been dyed, the color might fade onto the leather. When you dust the furniture, use a vacuum cleaner to clean between the cushions and in any crevices.

Always try to clean spots and spills immediately to prevent the substance from soaking into the leather. Blot the area with a clean cloth using warm water. Rubbing the stain will only make it worse. Use as little water as possible, use an absorbent cloth to soak up excess water and allow it to air dry.

For a more thorough cleaning, use some warm water and a natural soap that doesn't contain any type of oil. Avoid using cleaning solvents such as furniture polish, and oily or abrasive cleaners. Soaps and cleaners that contain oil will cause the leather to deteriorate and crack. Before you use any type of cleaning product, test it on an area where it can't be seen.

If you do have a stubborn spot or stain, use a cleaner that doesn't contain chemicals. There are numerous commercial leather cleaning products that are safe to use. However, you can often remove stains on leather with products you already have.

You should never apply water to grease or oil stains. Instead, simply clean the spot with a dry cloth. Apply a little corn starch or talcum powder to the area and let it set for several hours to absorb any excess oil. Mildew stains can often be removed by using one cup of water and one cup of rubbing alcohol.

If you have an ink stain, try spraying the area with hair spray and wipe it with a dry cloth. Ink can be almost impossible to remove, especially if it's permanent ink. But, even if the hair spray don't completely remove the ink, it will usually make it lighter and less noticeable. If the stain is too severe, you may need to consult a professional.

If you have small children, chances are sooner or later you're going to find gum stuck to your leather furniture. Simply place an ice cube into a plastic bag and rub it over the area to freeze the gum and pull it off. If there is any residue left, use a hair dry to warm the gum and wipe it off with a soft rag.

Most stains including urine, blood and milk can usually be removed with a damp cloth. Just remember, no matter what type of stain it is, you'll have more success removing it if you clean it immediately. You can even help prevent stains by applying a good quality leather conditioner several times a year. It will help keep the leather soft and provide a protective coating for the surface.
