If it is a minor discoloration, try washing stairs several times with a non-abrasive cleaner.
If they are deep stains, take some cakes of Ivory soap, cut them up and dissolve in hot water until you have a "slurp." Paint this on the stone and let it sit for some hours (ensure no one uses the stairs for this period otherwise accidents are sure to happen). Hose and wash it all off. You might do this for a couple of days if the stains on your marble stairs are really deeper.
