The degree of tarnishing depends upon the degree of composition of gold and other metals in the alloy. Therefore, lesser the composition of gold, higher will be the degree of tarnishing. But if you are using then the baking soda or toothpaste turning a brown or black color is an indication that the dirt and grime are removed completely. Once the jewelry is dry, if it looks dull, rub it gently with a jewelry polishing cloth. Use a clean cloth so that the gold is not scratched. Avoid using paper products such as tissues because they contain particles of wood that can scratch the gold's surface.

Before storing, keep them for some hours to dry. Let the gold jewelry lie flat and air dry completely. Moisture fastens the tarnishing process so it's important to make sure your gold jewelry is dry before putting it away. Rub with the polishing cloth in varying straight lines and not in circular movements which will avoid creating patterns. Avoid your gold necklaces to get in touch with chemicals like perfume, hairspray, deodorant spray, body lotion, acetone, bleach, or turpentine. While rubbing your necklace in your fingers, rinse well to remove all cleaning products.
