How To Clean Your Tall Windows

Tall windows can add a touch of elegance and finish to your home

, but cleaning them can be intimidating. Most step ladders are too short to reach the top of the window, and adjusting any ladder every few inches can be a hassle. You could hire professionals, but they can charge hundreds of dollars. So, many homeowners are tackling this task themselves.

How to Keep Your Tall Window Clean

Supplies: Buy an extendable, aluminum rod with a sponge or window-wand attachment. If your sponge doesn't come with an attached wringer, buy a professional-grade squeegee, as well.

Solution: Mix a capful of ammonia or five drops of liquid dish detergent in two gallons of water. Don't add anything else, as this might cause streaking

Technique: Dip your sponge into the solution, and clean the top half of the window. Use downward strokes to generously coat the window, and repeat this step to loosen any stubborn soil. Rub the sponge against the frame to pick up any dirt you may have pushed against the frame.

Drying: Tilt your squeegee or wrung-out sponge, and, pull the squeegee across horizontally. After the window is dry, squeegee again--this time, vertically. Make sure you dry your squeegee or sponge with a paper towel between strokes.

Now, repeat these steps to clean the bottom half of your tall window.

Exterior Cleaning

To keep the outside of your tall window clean, use a garden hose, your cleaning solution, and a hose-driven plant food bottle. Fill the bottle with your cleaning solution, attach it to your hose, and spray the solution onto your window. Next, spray the window with plain water.

Tall, floor-to-ceiling windows can add stature and polish to any home, but not if those windows are covered in dirt. So, follow these tips to keep your tall window clean.
