How To Combat Bandwidth Theft?
Bandwidth theft is wrong practice of using content available on others website into your website without authorized permission
. In the last article I had mentioned about the Bandwidth theft and its consequences. In this article I will tell you the ways by the help of which you can protect your data, thus protect yourself from becoming a victim of Bandwidth theft.
One of the best methods is to make changes in the .htaccess file. By using this method 503 error is shown in place of copied content. You have to add some lines of code into your .htaccess file, which is located in the websites root directory.
RewwritEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^HTTP://(.+.)?ursite.com/ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteRule.*.(jpe? g|gif|bmp|png|jpg)$ /images/nohotolink.jpe [L]
By using this code the unauthorized person cant steal images form your website if they do so then it will show image name nohotolink.jpg In place of original image. In place of ursite.com you have to mention the name of your website to prevent the bandwidth theft. Then you have to create image titled nohotlink.jpe, and place it at the location myfolder_1/image/folder (location according to my computer). It must be noticed that I have used file extension .jpe as the files with extension .jpeg and .jpg are blocked from appearing on the others websites, but this exception allows you to show your image which is located at the above specified location.
If you want to block hot linking and want your images to be indexed by the crawlers then you have to add following changes into your .htaccess file, which is located in the websites root directory.
RewritEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} .
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://([^.]+.)?ursite. [NC}
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !google. [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !search?g=cache [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !msn. [NC]
RewrtieCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !yahoo. [NC]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/hotlinker.gif$
RewriteRule .(g|gif|bmp|png|jpg)$ /hotolinker.gif [NC,L]
The above mentioned code hotolinker.gif is the custom image created by me (you have to insert the filename created by you.)
Important tips to prevent Bandwidth thefts:
Change File Name regularly: It is always advised to change filename regularly so that if somebody steals your data then he/she will get error or blank when content file name is changed.
If you are using Apache Server you can use Mod_Rewrite to restrict access from images or content saved on your website.
Some of the web hosting sites doesnt allow inserting Mod_Rewrite code on your webpage. So for eliminating Bandwidth theft you can use HTML Encryption, So that nobody can get access to your content.
