However, this proves to be a much more difficult challenge when you think about the

fact that most of us have at least a twenty minute commute in the morning to get to work, over half of which is spent sitting in stop and go traffic. So, what do you do when you are trying to save a few extra bucks at the pump?

Conserving gasoline is not nearly as difficult as many people make it out to be. Sure, you have to get to yourself to work each day, take road trips or run errands, but there are ways to conserve gasoline that won't set you back. For starters, whenever you go out for a drive the next time, pay attention to how fast you are driving. Do you tend to drive over the speed limit? Are you the kind of person who drives with the flow of traffic. Something as simple as adjusting the speed with which you drive can greatly reduce your chances of not only getting into an accident or being cited by a police officer, but it can also save you money. Another example of how to save gasoline is to increase the stopping distance between you and the other person in front of you. When you are on the highway, you should increase this stopping distance to at least three car lengths. When on residential roads, use your judgment, but try to maintain at least two car lengths behind the person in front of you- especially if that person appears unsure of what direction they are going to be turning.

When you increase the stopping distance between you and the other driver in front of you, you are allowing yourself more time to react, PLUS it means that you won't have to brake as often. As we all know too well, whenever you have to apply constant on-and-off pressure to your brakes, it causes you to surge or drive in a stop-and-go fashion, which greatly reduces your vehicles fuel. This is also why many people will look for the roads with the fewest stop lights on them or will simply take a highway if at all possible.

Another way to conserve gasoline is to pay attention to traffic patterns. If you know that the traffic is heaviest during a certain part of the day, avoid that part of the day. Maybe this means staying a little later at the office. In many cases, staying late at the office or opting to join a gym nearby to where your office is (preferably within walking distance) is a better option because with many traffic patterns, you sometimes wind up sitting in traffic for a longer period of time. Therefore, the extra time that you spend doing something constructive at the office or going to the gym puts you in a position where you are arriving home around the same time that you would have been anyway had you left during a peak rush hour slot.
