How To Control A Flea Infestation

Signs of spring and warmer weather often signal increased activity for fleas

. Once fleas have infested your home, it can be an ongoing battle to keep them under control. Fleas can live for months without any blood meals and their eggs can be left unaffected by insecticides, only to emerge just after you think your flea problem is gone. In this article we will discuss recommendations for controlling a flea infestation in and out of your home.

Inside your home, flea control recommendations:

Sprinkle rugs and carpets with Diatomaceous earth before an outing then vacuum upon return. Continue regular vacuuming and disposal of the contents of your vacuum cleaner. I would suggest dumping the contents into a zip lock bag, sealing, and relocating it to the trash bin. Vacuuming will suck up fleas in their egg, larva, and pupae stages. Even if you kill fleas in your home by chemical means, these different forms of the flea could be hiding in your carpet, pet bedding, low hanging drapes, just waiting to emerge.

Use an insecticide spray rated for indoor flea control or fogging chemicals to kill your fleas. Be sure to evacuate the area that is treated until all fabrics, etc. are completely dry. Foggers have a minimum time frame that you MUST evacuate your home for. Do not under any circumstances, return until that time window has passed. Insecticide sprays can be used along base boards and in crack and crevices to for longer term resistance. Permethrin is a popular chemical for controlling fleas.

Wash all linens, curtains and pillows on the hottest cycle in your washing machine.

Be careful to not spray toys, clothing or personal belongings. Instead run these through the hot cycle on your washer to release eggs, larva, and pupae.

In order to completely kill your flea population, make sure that you treat your yard in conjunction with your home. This should occur simultaneously so that you are not contributing to the cycle of flea/no flea/flea.

For outdoor flea control, there are chemical insecticides/pesticides that can be mixed with water, and sprayed generously with a pump sprayer where ever you and your pet frequent. The insecticides can be mixed with and insect growth regulator to disable the larva from growing into adult fleas. There are alternate methods such as natural flea control products available with online pest control supplies. Remove all outdoor pets from the area being treated and do not reintroduce them until the chemicals have dried.

Simultaneously wash any pets and treat them with a flea deterrent.

The life cycle of a flea is three to four weeks, so keep your eyes peeled for signs of life around that time. If any fleas are noted, repeat the above process once more with feeling, and your flea trouble will be nothing but a distant memory.
