How To Cope With Information Overload
Information overload is the great enemy of the independent business person
. Everyone experiences this, and you have to push through it.
For most of us, e-Marketing represents a whole new way to go about making a living. Most of us make money by holding a job. In a job, the basic arrangement is that you do something and you get paid for it over time.
When you switch to working for yourself, you are no longer paid for the time you put in. In order to make money, you need to do two things: offer great products or services, and drum up business. If you arent doing both of these effectively, you are not making money.
Most people are stronger on one side of this equation than the other.Most often, people are better at delivering the goods than we are at marketing, though it may work the other way for you.
You can use e-Marketing practices to promote any business. With these low-cost and easily accessible options, everyone can do it. But there are many facets to it, and learning about it all can be overwhelming.
So is there a way to focus only on the important parts and ignore the rest? The short answer is no. Your experience, skills, and the requirements of your business make each situation unique.
Dedication, research and testing will get you to the point of mastery. But using this approach, it could take you as long as 20 years to achieve it. But you want to start making money now, not 20 years from now.
But information overload causes many of us to become paralyzed or just stop trying. When asked why they are stuck, why they arent taking action, the most common answer is that they have a sense of helplessness and overwhelm.
This is like a rite of passage that all e-Marketers must go through, including all the ones you know have managed to succeed.
It is important to note that information overload isn't only for novices. You will actually be dealing with it for as long as you are an e-Marketer! You can be doing this for years and there will still be new strategies and techniques to learn, and more work to do than you have time for. Learning how to move beyond the overwhelm now will be an asset you will use over and over again.
By adopting a few simple strategies, you can get beyond information overload whenever it strikes.
- Look at the things you want to accomplish with a new point of view: Approach mastering them as you would approach teaching a new skill to a young child. The new thing needs to be a challenge, or stretch for the child; otherwise they will not learn and progress.
But the child also must understand that the new challenge is achievable. A goal which is too advanced for them will freeze them from taking action. They may need to see someone else do it first, or have you help them do it a few times before they get up the nerve to try it on their own.
This same kind of target - something that is a challenge for you, but which you can see is possible to accomplish - is what you want to set for yourself. If you are not motivated, you may be challenging yourself too little. Set your goals too high and you will feel overwhelmed.
- Focus on one project at a time. Don't fool yourself into thinking you are succeeding by multitasking. Our brains were not designed to keep focus on several things at once. In fact, it is just the opposite: our brains filter and delete almost all of what it takes in, in order to help us focus on a particular task at hand.Research shows that, contrary to popular belief, multitasking makes us less efficient, and less productive. Multitasking has also been shown to kill brain cells! Keeping your focus on one thing increases productivity and makes us more efficient. Put an end to your multitasking right away!
- Put a system in place to manage your to do list: One huge, regular stress generator is just trying to keep track of all of our tasks. You can eliminate this stress by having a system which tracks your tasks. This can be very simple just keep a list somewhere.Whenever a new "to do" pops up, just add it to the list and forget about it for now. You will be reminded to do it again when you next check your task list.
Check your list every day, and reprioritize it at night so you are ready to attack it first thing the next morning. Put your critical work at the top of the list and the least critical at the bottom.
Put new tasks at the bottom of the list as they come up during the day. Dont let new tasks distract you from doing the things you have previously identified as the most priorities.
Dont let other distractions, like checking email, interrupt the order you handle your tasks. E-mail is a great enemy to making progress. Most of us start the day with email, and then find half the day is gone before we get to item number 1 on our priority list.
Many entrepreneurs struggle with this. The entrepreneurial spirit tends to like less rigidity. If this describes you, then it is all the more important the you recognize the tendency and adopt simple tactics to help keep you focused.
- Follow the 80/20 rule. The 80/20 rule says that 80 percent of our results come out of only 20 percent of our actions. Figure out what work gives you the biggest gains, and focus on those. Most of what you do probably gives you only small, or no gains.These tasks should be your lowest priority, or should be ignored, delegated or outsourced.
