How To Crate Train Your Puppy

Crate training your dog provides them with a deep sense of safety

. Dogs of course live in dens. Dens keep them from threat, keep them temperate and dry, and help out them to keep their young in safe hands and protected.

Crate training should be kept very positive. Introduce your puppy or adult dog to the crate slowly. Put something soft in the bottom of the crate, along with some of your dog's toys. Throw some treats inside.

Once your dog is comfortable going in and out of the crate, it is time to start getting him used to being confined. Throw some treats in the crate, and once your dog is inside, close the door. Wait a minute or so, and as long as your dog is quiet, let him out of the crate. Slowly extend the amount of time you leave your dog in the crate while you are at home until he is comfortable being confined in the crate for up to an hour or more. Each time the puppy goes into the crate on its own, provide plenty of praise to create a positive association with the crate.

Increase the amount of time the puppy spends in the crate with the door closed in five-minute increments. If it whines, scratches or barks, do not open the door; the door should only be opened when the dog is quiet. This teaches proper crate behavior and reinforces its reward for being quiet. If the puppy continues to show signs of stress for long periods, go back to the previous amount of time and begin working toward increasing it again.

Moreover older dogs may have bladder control issues. Plan your crating based on your puppies needs. Remember that if you crate them for too long theyll be forced to go in their crate and that type of accident can really knock training off track. Not to mention it makes them unhappy to be forced to sleep in a messy crate.

Dont use the crate for penalty. Your dogs crate is supposed to be a protected and joyful place. It is the spot he sleeps in. It is where he goes when youre not home. If you use his shelter as punishment, then it loses its value. It is no longer a safe place and being confined there will breed bitterness and unwanted and harsh behaviors.

Dogs learn to love their crate as their very own special place/den. It becomes a familiar and secure place, whether in the car, at a motel or a dog show, visiting, or just at home.
