How To Deal With Ocular Migraine

Ocular Migraine or usually referred to as ophthalmic migraines

, retinal migraines and eye migraines by ophthalmologists is a common problem. It is a variation of migraine characterized as painless, temporary visual disturbances that may affect one eye or both. Doctors believe that ocular migraine is caused by vascular spasm (sudden, brief tightening of a blood vessel) as with many other kinds of migraines. In this case, the spasm directly affects the ocular blood supply or literally the blood supply to the vision center in the brain.

The onset of this, typically begin with a visual disturbance. The feeling of semi-circular, jagged, shimmering light is the symptoms for this which is felt from the peripheral vision. This disturbance usually obscures the vision within the jagged area. The light that is seen is often described a pale pastel in color. Most of the time, the visual disturbance lasts only for few minutes and then disappears. A mild headache follows but in some instances this does not happen. Many people who suffered from ocular migraine complain only of fatigue after the visual disturbance.

Though this seems frightening, ocular migraines are harmless. Actually, it is resolved within 20-30 minutes without medication. Symptoms for this vary depending on the underlying problem, because the scope of the various types and causes are vast. However, the most viewed or common symptom is headache relative to the eyes. Studies of the World Health Organization (WHO) also show that migraines have a genetic basis. Interestingly, people who suffer from the disorder have a family history of migraine headaches.Since the body can easily recover with ocular migraine which only takes half an hour, it requires no treatment. The only thing required is to rest for a while and stop anything you are doing until your normal vision returns.

If the headache persists and your vision does not return within the normal expected time, an examination with the experts must be sought quickly. Optometrists and ophthalmologists conduct eye examination to see the condition of your eyes. This is important to diagnose and treat other serious eye problems on the very least. You may want to seek an advice from your doctor to the things you can do, like first aid actions or herbal treatment. Asking for medical treatment especially a prescription is also a good act. Nowadays, many medicines designed to prevent future attacks of migraines are circulating.

Preventive medical treatment is also a wise decision to those people who are suffering migraines that last longer than 24 hours or who experience more than two migraines per month.

Keeping a track record of your diet and activities of your day prior the start of the migraine can also help to easily diagnose the illness. Even you can see the things that trigger it, so that you can avoid doing them or eating them in case of food. If you find out that your ocular migraine is stress-related, you may lessen the intensity or the time of recurrence of the headache by getting plenty of sleep. Eating healthy food plus drinking enough water may even make you feel better. If you consider, exercise daily and taking a vacation are always an option.
