How To Design A Career Plan
There are various ways you can design your career plan
. But there are some very important key components that you should make sure to include to help keep you on track and ensure success.
A good career plan should always start with a very specific mission statement. A mission statement is basically your main goal or objective. It usually consists of a few sentences that describe what you want to achieve. Its main purpose is to define your goal and give you a sense of direction.
Once you have a strong mission statement written, you will then want to start writing out the various goals you will need to accomplish in order to achieve your larger goal or mission. With each goal you list, it is important to include a specific date of completion. This will help to following through with whatever actions need to be taken to achieve each goal.
After you have your goals written out, you will then want to break each goal down into smaller steps or action. It will be these steps and actions that will eventually help you to achieve each of your goals. Again, it is very important to assign a completion date for each of these smaller actions. The due dates should be very specific. If you have an action that you are to do on an ongoing basis, then write the word "Ongoing" or "Daily" or "Monthly" next to that action, depending on how often it is to be done.
Once you have your goals broken down into smaller steps/actions, you will use the due dates you assigned to each step/action to create your daily to-do lists.
The important thing to remember when constructing your career plan is that although it starts with your mission statement/main goal, the goals and actions listed under that should be the ones you need to start on right now. Each goal that follows will be the ones that will help to build upon the one before it.
As an example, let's say one of your goals is to obtain a bachelor's degree. Although obtaining the degree is your goal, there are many smaller actions that you will need to carry out in order to achieve that goal. For example, first you will need to research the various schools and degree programs. You will next need to enroll in a program and schedule your classes. You will then need to attend the classes and continue to do so for several semesters or quarters. Eventually you will earn your degree, but there are many steps you will set up as smaller goals and actions to get there. It is very much like laying bricks. You start with one and keep adding others on. Before you know it, you have built whatever you set out to build, and you did so one brick at a time.
There are many different ways to write out your career plan. Some like to use an outline format, while others prefer to write out their goals in paragraph format. You may even want to write out goals one month at a time. Feel free to experiment with various formats until you find which one works best for you.
