A water feature with a waterfall in the landscape becomes the focal point of the yard
. The sound of the water bouncing over rocks before it hits the pond masks intrusive noises from the street or city. The waterfall aerates the water providing more oxygen for fish and plants. The action of the pump pulls water down to the bottom of the pond which keeps the water clearer. If one waterfall is beneficial, then two should be even more so.
Build the waterfalls by laying out their courses on the mounded dirt. When you're satisfied with the general look, lay vinyl liner over the course.
Test the waterfalls by running water from a hose down the course. Water takes the path of least resistance which may not be obvious without a test. Cover the vinyl with rocks. The vinyl should capture all the water and not let any splash off to the sides.
Test again once the rocks are in place. If possible use two hoses, one for each waterfall so you can see how they look together.
Select a waterfall pump that has the capacity to raise the water from the bottom of the pond to the top of the waterfall. For example if your pond is 3 feet deep and the waterfalls are 2 feet high you would need a pump that has the capacity to vertically pump 5 feet.
Attach the waterfall tubing to the pump. Place the pump in the deepest part of the pond. Thread the tubing up the side of the pond behind where the highest waterfall starts.
Insert a tee fitting from the lawn and garden irrigation section of a home improvement store to the end of the tube. Attach tubes to each of the ends of the tee fitting. Place the ends of the tube where you want the two waterfalls to start.
Turn on the pump and adjust the rocks for each of the waterfalls so the water falls over and not behind the rocks.
Look at how the water sprays as well. If it sprays onto areas that aren't lined with plastic underneath the rocks to direct the water back into the pond, you'll quickly empty out the pond.
A pump that doesn't have the capacity to lift the water the correct height will burn out quicker. It also won't circulate the water enough times to stay clear. Make sure the pump you buy has more than enough power.
