How To Determine The Moisturizer That Is Right For You

While it is essential to moisturize the skin on a daily basis

, finding the right moisturizer for one's skin type can seem like a daunting challenge. It will be important to focus only on those products that meet the individual's unique skin care needs. Young skin and mature skin require different moisturizers as do oily skin, dry skin, combination skin, and sensitive skin. Moisturizers formulated for specific skin types will be of the most benefit. A proper moisturizer can help relieve dry, itchy skin, reduce breakouts, diminish the signs of aging, and protect skin from damage caused by elements such as the sun, wind, and cold.

Choosing a Moisturizer:

When shopping for skin products such as moisturizers individuals need to determine the type of product that will best meet their overall skin care needs. Anti-aging products and skincare are available in creams, lotions and ointments and should always contain active and natural ingredients which can more efficiently add moisture and treatment to the skin.

Oily Skin:

Individuals with oily skin will want to use a moisturizer that is oil-free and water-based. These light moisturizers often contain silicones. Silicones can have a slight drying effect on the skin, which can be beneficial to oily skin. Mineral oils and mineral waxes should be avoided because these products can clog pores and lead to breakouts.

Dry Skin:

Dry skin will benefit from moisturizers that are heavy and oil-based. These types of moisturizers will saturate the skin and help keep the skin from drying out. Cream moisturizers are an excellent option for individuals with dry skin. For individuals with extremely dry skin it will be important to use a moisturizer that contains emollients. Emollients work in two ways: to reduce the skin's moisture evaporation and increase the skin's hydration.

Combination Skin:

Combination skin can be a bit more difficult to moisturize, but treating combination skin is not impossible. People with a combination skin type will need to find moisturisers which contain vitamin A retinols and alpha hydroxy acids if the want the most efficient effects. The best type of moisturizer for combination skin will be a water-based moisturizer. Individuals can apply more or less of the moisturizer based on how dry or oily their skin is on any given day.

Sensitive Skin:

Sensitive skin needs hypoallergenic and fragrance free moisturizers that contain vitamins A and E. Moisturizers for sensitive skin should also contain a sunscreen of at least SPF15. Individuals with sensitive skin will need to apply the moisturizer after showering or cleansing, and they will want to avoid over-moisturizing.

Mature Skin vs Young Skin:

Anti-aging moisturizers help keep young skin healthy, smooth, and well-hydrated. Moisturisers that include alpha hydroxy acids, selenium and tropoelastin will assist in the prevention of wrinkles appearing in more mature skin types.
