How To Determine Whether Dental Bridges And Restorative Dentistry Is Right For You
Are you missing one or more of your natural teeth
? If so, you may be an ideal candidate for a dental bridge. Dental bridges are fixed dental restorations that fill the gaps left by missing teeth. Traditional dental bridges are supported by natural teeth while implant-supported bridges replace teeth while putting no pressure on surrounding natural teeth.
Traditional dental bridges are comprised of a replacement tooth or teeth attached by a metal band to porcelain crowns. These porcelain crowns are attached to the teeth adjacent to a gap or, in the cases of back teeth, the teeth to the left or right of the gap, depending on which side of the mouth the teeth are missing from. Traditional bridges are generally fixed to teeth; however, they may take the form of removable partial dentures, in which case they can be removed for cleaning.
For those who are searching for a more permanent solution to their missing teeth, dental bridges (like porcelain crowns and full dentures) can be secured by dental implants. Dental implants are titanium rods that are planted into the jawbone, with which they integrate over time to become, in essence, part of a patients natural anatomy. Implant-supported bridges are the most stable and realistic-looking type of dental bridge currently available.
Traditional dental bridges may not be the best choice for those whose remaining natural teeth are weakened or otherwise damaged; these teeth may not be able to provide the structural strength necessary to support a bridge. Likewise, those with insufficient jaw bone a problem common among those who have gone years without replacing their missing teeth may not be good candidates for implant-supported dental bridges. In the latter case, there may be some hope, however; bone grafting procedures may be performed to increase bone density, possibly enabling the jaw to support the titanium implants.
To find out whether a dental bridge is a good option for you, consult with a cosmetic dentist in your area.
