How To Detox Your Body - Detoxing Stressful Situations
You may think that knowing how to detox your body from every day stresses is not necessary
, but make no mistake - stress is a killer. Our bodies respond as they did back in the Stone Age when a wolf entered our cave. Signals from the brain trigger the release of stress hormones adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol, which speed up the heart and breathing rates. Blood is diverted from the organs and skin to the muscles of the trunk, arms and legs that we would need to run away. Kidney function slows down; the salivary glands dry up; the liver releases more sugar and fat to provide energy for the muscles; digestion slows or stops. All these changes and more can take place in an instant.
If the stressful situation persists, cortisol increases our blood-sugar levels to keep providing energy, and aldosterone helps to keep the blood pressure raised so the body can keep its blood circulating. However, our supply of stress hormones is finite. The body has to produce them from scratch from the food we eat, to replace ones that are used up.
After long periods of continual stress we can simply run out of these stress hormones, a state know as 'adrenal exhaustion' in which blood sugar drops resulting in extreme fatigue. The delicate balance between the brain and the immune system can be damaged, since cortisol helps to regulate it, and the result can be an immune system overreaction that harms healthy cells and tissues.
Neutralizing Stress
You will recognize from this description of the physiological effects of stress that most of them are the direct opposite of what you are trying to achieve when you detox your body and could even undo all your good work. The solution is to seek ways of neutralizing stressful situations in your life and protect yourself if possible from such harmful physical reactions.
No one can be completely stress-free. We need a little stress to help us do our best in exams or driving tests, meet work deadlines and take on new challenges. So long as these stresses are spread out, with plenty of space between, the body has time to replenish itself. But if your daily routine has continual stressful situations, you need to change them.
How Stressed Are You?
Do you commute to work through fume-laden traffic jams or stand like a sardine on a crowded train every morning? How can you change this?
Do you have a boss who uses emotional blackmail or aggressive bullying techniques to pressurize the workforce? How can you change this?
Do you live on a knife edge at home with an unreasonable, depressive or volatile partner? How can you change this?
Are you over-committed in life, always rushing from pillar to post to keep up with all your responsibilities? How can you change this?
If you've answered 'yes' or 'I don't know' or 'I can't' to any of these questions then the truth is that you have to change your life or you could be killing yourself. Take a step back and start considering changing your job, working freelance or flexitime, starting your own business, getting more help with childcare, going to couples therapy, resigning from a few committees, shedding some responsibilities - whatever it takes to bring your life back to a more manageable level.
