How To Do Stuff

We all do lots of different things in our daily life

, most of the time without thinking about how to do stuff that we are doing. Although this casual way of doing things works most of the time, the results can be less than optimal. Let us consider the right way of doing things or how to do things. The following five steps are usually involved with most of the things that we do and identifying, separating and paying special attention to each of these steps can improve our efficiency and quality of result. These steps are not about doing some specific things but are about how to do things in general. These are applicable to stuff as simple as making tea or as complex as designing large computer software.

1.Setting Objective

The first step in how to do things is deciding what exactly you want to do or setting objective. This step defines the final outcome of the activity or the thing that you want to do. For example in case of writing of an article, the objective can be simply an article name or article name and optimal article size, with the mention of targeted audience and parameters. Naturally; the second, detailed objective will result in a better article.

2.Gathering Information

The second step is to gather information that youll need to achieve your objective. In case of writing article this would involve research and gathering relevant information from different sources.

3.Planning

Planning is the next step and is primarily involved with the exact steps following which, the objective would be achieved. Proper planning can take time and may seem a waste of time and resources but can significantly improve efficiency and overall quality of the end result. In case of writing an article planning may involve deciding of article format, writing down bullet points etc.

4.Execution

This would involve execution of the plan that was prepared in the planning phase. For optimal result it is a good idea to monitor the execution carefully and if required make changes in the plan based on observation. In our example execution would involve actual writing of the article. At the end of execution the objective would be achieved or the thing that we set out to do in the first place would be done.

5.Review / Assessment

The final step is the review or testing of the thing that we have done. This can be as simple as testing the tea to see if the added sugar and cream is right, if you were making tea. In case of writing an article this would involve proof reading the article for errors. Based on the result of assessment you may have to make changes in your product or may have to do the whole thing from the beginning again as well.

These five steps of how to do things are nearly always followed when you are doing any stuff, consciously or without thought. Following them expletively can improve your performance and prove useful if you are stuck and dont seem to know how to do stuff.
