How To Do Your Own Gas Grill Maintenance at Home and Save Money -- 7 Easy Tips Anyone Can Do

Your gas grill is an investment -- both in money and family enjoyment

. So keeping it running well will not only save you money, but also make your grilling experiences, family outings and friendly cookouts much better. The less time you have to spend worrying about your grill, the more time you will have to spend with your family and friends.

Here are a few useful tips for maintaining your grill in peak condition:

1. Clean your burners before the first grilling of the season and as needed throughout the year. To clean -- remove the burners and use a wire brush clean the exterior of the burner. This will remove excessive residue and any loose rust. Clean out the clogged up gas holes with a paper clip. Check you venturi tubes for possible blockages by insects and clean with a venturi brush or bent coat hanger.

2. Clean grates are a must for good grilling. Clean the cooking grids easily by covering them with a layer of aluminum foil and running the grill on high for 10 to 15 minutes. The baked-on food will burn to a fine white powder which can be easily brushed away.

3. Change your lava rock every year or when saturated with barbecue drippings to prevent flare ups. Ceramic or porcelain briquettes are less porous and can be baked clean by turning them over and heating.

4. Protect your grill's outer body from the weather by coating the outside of the grill with a light coating of vegetable oil applied with a paper towel while the grill is cool.

5. Discourage critters like squirrels from chewing and damaging the gas supply hose from your tank, occasionally wipe the hose down with an ammonia and water cleaner to remove the BBQ drippings and their seductive smell.
