How To Easily Child-proof Your Home

Bringing children into your home by growing your family or just for a temporary visit means you will need to make some changes

. Houses can be dangerous places for kids if you do not know what to look for. If you are expecting the company of children in your future, take some time to make things safe so they can move throughout the space without worry of injury or damage to the property. Start with the obvious problems like preventing falls such as something as simple as a rail guard for fall protection can prevent bumps and bruises and maybe even save a life. There are a number of ways to keep kids from falling down stairs, out windows or off ledges and porches. Find the option that works best for you that is affordable and easy to install.

Another dangerous place in around the home for kids is the pool. Even children that have experience swimming may have mishaps if the pool is not covered when not in use. This is especially true for those who have built-in pools that remained filled all winter. Be sure you put a sturdy cover over the pool to prevent children and animals from falling in when the water is unbearably cold. During the summer season, keep a close eye on children when they are outdoors and if necessary, put a fence around the pool.

In addition to surrounding your pool with a fence, consider putting a fence around your property if you live near a busy road. This prevents children from wandering into the street when they are playing. A fence will also help keep people off of your property which will help maintain your landscaping and prevent dangerous strangers from approaching your children when they are outdoors.

When your children are very young and they like to explore things by putting them into their mouths, they may be exposed to a number of dangerous chemicals in the house. In addition to buying more natural products, you should keep children out of storage areas where you keep cleaning and household supplies. This can be done with special cabinet locks or plastic inserts that make it difficult to call cabinets open. It will make getting to the products less convenient for the adults, but making them impossible for kids to reach is worth the extra effort. Once your children are old enough to understand cleaning products are not for eating, you can remove the cabinet locks.

Finally, remember kitchen safety when kids are around. These are things you should do all the time, but when only adults live in a home, you may let caution slide. Once there are children in the area, it is especially important to remember the rules of kitchen safety. When cooking on the stove, turn the handles toward the back. After using knives, place them directly into the dishwasher, or if washing by hand, do not drop them directly into the water. Lastly, be sure to have a fire extinguisher on hand in case there is an emergency.
