How To Effectively Optimise A Website For Search Engines

Whether you've started a brand new website or have an existing domain one thing that

you must undertake is SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) in order to direct traffic to your domain. Without any form of SEO or advertising your website will not see much if any traffic and this is why a good structure and well designed website is essential.

SEO is vital if you want your site to have any online presence and compared to paid adverts the cost of undertaking SEO is minimal. All of this depends on the type of website you own, if you have a large domain with already a stable amount of traffic and want to get higher SERP's rankings then it might be best to hire an agency to take on the work for you as you will require that professional touch so to say. If you own a smaller website and are looking for an increase in visits then the following recommendations may help you in the short term.

One of the first things to be analysed when it comes to an SEO audit of a website are the keywords used within the page. Keywords should be located within the Meta tags, Meta description, in the H1 and H2 headings and within the page content. This will help search engine spiders to analyse your site and to determine how significant the site is in relation to the end users original search query. The more relevant and accurate your keywords are to the end users query, the more chance your website has of appearing in that end users search results.

Having the right keywords in the right places is only half the challenge though as in order to be ranked in at least the top 100 SERP's rankings your website will need some backlinks pointing back to your site from reputable websites. The most common practice for this is to write articles that are relevant to your industry and to post them onto article sites which will provide you with a useful backlink and also provide exposure for your company.

It is important to remember that when posting articles to article sites to make sure that the links that your gaining from that particular site are viable and have a 'do follow' characteristic which allows that link's value to be counted by Google. If you post to article websites that have a 'no follow' attribute then those backlinks to your website won't count towards much.

Finally it is imperative to remember that SEO is an ongoing process and once you reach the 1st page of the search results it's important not to fool yourself into believing your work is done.
