How To Execute the No Huddle Offense
The No Huddle Offense is more an offensive strategy and should not be confused with the two minute offense or hurry up offense.
This year the Oregon Ducks have risen to top of the PAC 10 and will play the Auburn Tigers in the MNC Game. They have done it using the No Huddle Offense. By controlling the tempo of the game and wearing down defenses they have dominated their competition.
This article will focus on how to run a successful No Huddle Offense. It will discuss the how to control the defense, the various options available in this offensive strategy and suggest a way to keep the offensive athletes conditioned for the rigors of the No Huddle.
1.Preparation:
This starts with the coaching staff. Coaches have to design the play calling script develop the hand signals and audible codes and make sure everyone on the offense knows the signals. Many teams give wrist bands with the play list to all the players on the offense.
2.Set Game Tempo:
a.Getting the offense lined up as fast possible at the end of a play, ready to run another play will control the games speed.
b.This limits substitution for the defense and keeps them in a base defense.
c.Have scenario plays on the play list so the offense is ready to roll regardless of down and yardage.
d.Have multiple formation plays in the game plan to make it more difficult for the defense to get reads.
3.Conditioning:
Conditioning the offensive player is essential. The idea of the No Huddle is to control the game speed and wear out the defense. Done right the defensive line will play the equivalent of 5 quarters in a game, but so does the offensive line.
4.Conditioning Drill:
Simulation drills are the most effective conditioning drills; it's the simple rule of thumb. You play the way you practice.
1.Place a ball on alternate hash marks every ten yards all the way down the field.
2.Coaches signal the play into the QB. The play is run at full speed for 10 to 15 yards. The offense runs across the field to the next football, establishing a new LOS. Since this is a conditioning drill don't run the plays against the defense. What you want is to develop the stamina of the players while getting the timing and execution down and be physically prepared for the pace during the game.
3.This drill is executed all the way down the field. It is best to do this drill at the end of practice.
Installing a successful No Huddle Offense takes a lot of preparation for practices and games. The coaches and players must always be on the same page but when it is done right you run more plays increasing your scoring opportunities and in 4th quarter if your team is better conditioned, you have the opportunity to take over the game.
