This file gets created in Cached Exchange Mode of Exchange Server. Cached Exchange Mode furnishes better experience with Exchange Server email account. In this mode, a copy of mailbox database i.e. offline folder file (.ost) gets created computer for quick accessing of data. Whenever the users work in offline mode by choice or by connection issue, the mailbox data becomes available in the form of OST file and at times when the connection to Exchange Server gets available, this OST file gets synchronized with Exchange Server and becomes identical to the mailbox data on Exchange Server. All updates to mailbox data in OST gets updated, all mails saved in OST gets sent and many more.

Inaccessibility of Offline Folder File (.ost)

But, sometimes, this Offline folder file (.ost) becomes inaccessible due to reasons like Exchange Server crash, abrupt system shutdowns, bad hard disk sectors, virus issues, etc and the user becomes unable to synchronize its database with Exchange Server for carrying out their email communication.
