How To Fill A Dunhill Lighter

, Dunhill lighters are prized by collectors the world over. Knowing how to properly maintain them can mean the difference between a broken trinket and a valuable antique that will last for years to come

Butane model

Check the shape of the lighter. Butane model Dunhill lighters are rectangular with an automatic lid and have a rolling flame adjuster on the bottom or side.

Close the cap and turn the lighter upside-down.

Look for the filler valve on the bottom of the lighter.

Remove the filler valve by turning it counter-clockwise by hand. With some models, the filler valve has a slot and a small coin may be used to turn the valve.

Press the butane canister's nozzle into the filler valve until you hear a hissing sound. This means the butane is emptying into the lighter. Continue pressing until drops of the fluid escape from the valve.

Replace the filler valve.

Petrol model

Check the shape of the lighter. The majority of Dunhill lighters are petrol models, which use lighter fluid. They have rounded sides and an open top with an exposed flint.

Close the cap and turn the lighter upside-down.

Locate the filler screw at the center of the bottom of the lighter.

Unscrew and remove the filler screw.

Pour lighter fluid into the opening until the cotton wool inside becomes saturated with fluid.

Replace the filler screw. The flint wheel on the top of the lighter will shine if it got wet. Do not ignite the lighter until the flint wheel dries.
