How To Find A Good Driving Instructor
One of the main ways of finding a driving instructor is by recommendations
. Do you know anybody who has recently passed their driving test? Ask your friends and family if they know any good instructors locally to help you decide.
Be prepared to have to wait to get a booking with some instructors as good instructors tend to be busy due to all the recommendations. Some instructors do not need to advertise so do not be too put off if you have never heard of the instructor. Search the internet for forums where pupils will be talking about their experiences with learning to drive.
Always make sure that the driving instructor is legal and properly licensed, looks can be decieving so ensure that you check that they have the proper documentation when choosing. You may be tempted by a really cheap deal but ask yourself why is it such a good deal?
Check with the government appointed Driving Standards Agency to see if the instructor holds the proper credentials needed.Anyone giving driving instruction in exchange for money (or money's worth such as so-called "gifts or gratuities") MUST by LAW, be registered with the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) and MUST display a valid driving instructors licence on their vehicle whilst giving driving tuition.
A fully qualified instructor must display the licence on the windscreen at all times whilst teaching you. Some instructors are called PDI's these are trainee instructors and will display a pink badge.
On the reverse side of the licence (the bit visible from inside the vehicle) contains the following details, a photo of instructor, name of instructor, date of issue and expiry and the instructors advanced driving instructor number.
If the license is not displayed then do not be afraid to ask to see it and if they can not produce the license then do not take part any further.

How much do driving lessons cost? This is the question that can not be answered simply as a lot of factors count. Different areas and different grades of instructors will vary prices, the only way is to ring around and take a note of at least three instructors prices.
Driving Test Pass Rates.
How many people have passed their driving test with a particular driving instructor? Asking a driving instructor about their test pass rate may seem like the best way of establishing whether they're any good or not....but unfortunately it's not that straightforward!
The "driving instructor pass rates" question is meaningless for all practical purposes, as statistics can mean anything you want them to mean!
I've heard driving instructors quote a "100% Pass Rate", justified on the basis that "everyone passes eventually".Is it true? Of course not...some people give up learning and never pass...some people pass first time and some pass after several attempts, so how do you measure a pass rate?
Will you be the only pupil in the car? Some instructors will have another pupil in the car listening to the instruction which will help them but do you want that? Always ask to be sure that you will be alone with the instructor. Not many instructors do this nowadays so this should be fine.
Speak to a few instructors, find out how they are through good old fashioned communication. Are they friendly, ask them a few questions just to test their patience. If they are abrupt and impatient then maybe it would be best to choose another.
How easy is it to get hold of someone on the phone if you have a query or a problem? Some "one-man band" driving instructors teach all day and will only be available to return messages after they finish teaching for the day (which may be quite late). There's nothing wrong with that and many instructors work this way with minimal problems, but if you are happier knowing you can get hold someone to talk to if you need to, this may be an area to think about.
