How To Find An Off-leash Dog Park On The Road

Trying to locate a dog park in a hurry can lead to a vehicular or holiday disaster

. Trying to do it in a place you're not familiar with is worse: Think damaged car seats, piddle on the upholstery or in your running shoes, and a driver who's more distracted than a vet with a vampire bat.

Luckily, there are a few easy ways to find an off-leash dog park on the road.

First of all, don't settle for any park and think you can trust your dog off leash... You need to go to a proper dog park that's regulated as such by your local government, preferably with a fence or other containment system that keeps you and your friend safe from traffic, and where you won't pick up a hefty council fine before you even have time to bring out the poo bags.

It's also a good idea to make sure you have a good lead, collar and pet ID tag -- plus a spare of each -- whenever you set out for a dog park. You never know when Grover is going to make a badly timed bolt for a good-looking feline across the oval, and leave you wondering how you lost control of the lead. Get into the habit of securing your leash to your hand to avoid awkward chases across the park (or worse, right outside of it).

Many people recommend downloading a good mobile app catering especially for dog owners in your phone or iPad, or check out the location of a few local parks online before you leave the house.

Also keep in mind that some dog parks are harder to find as they don't have actual addresses. This can make it hard to take your pet there for an afternoon of playing around, unless you know the territory well.

In order to figure out where the park is, you will need to get directions. Most people associate their local dog park with a landmark of some sort. If the park you select has directions or a landmark listed, half of your job is completed and you'll be skipping all the way to the carpark.

If you're already out and about, passers-by should be familiar enough with the dog park to guide you the rest of the way. Take your pet and enjoy the afternoon running off some of that pent-up energy.
