Dogs are such amazing creatures - loyal to a fault
, tireless, fearless, always ready to provide a pick-me-up when you feel a bit under the weather. They give so much and ask for next to nothing in return.
Here then is a unique opportunity to give something back by choosing a great name for your dog.
I am always amazed at how many people struggle with this - it should be easy right? Well, yes and no, it's easy to come up with a name, not so easy to come up with an awesome name.
Let's consider for a moment what your dog's name represents. At a basic level, it allows you attract your dog's attention, by saying, "Listen up, I'm talking to you!" That's not all a name is though, or at least, not all it should be.
The name you give your dog should ideally be an expression of love, togetherness and friendship. It should describes the unique bond you share with your dog. No pressure then!
Never fear, it's really easy if you follow one of two simple systems. Either pick a name that describes your dog, or choose one that reflects your particular interests.
Let's look at the latter approach - A friend of mine has a passion for Boston Terriers - he has five of them in his current pack! He's also a music lover, so his dogs are named, Lennon, Hendrix, Sting, Dylan and Mercury. See how simple that is. Just think of your own hobbies or interests and you're good to go.
So if you love Country music, how about, Skeeter, Hank, or Waylon? Basketball fan? Shaq, Kareem, Jordan or your own favorite. Enjoy action movies? Try Indiana, Arnie, or Stallone. Get the picture?
But what if you'd like to pick a name based on your dog's appearance? Let's say you're looking for a good name for your black Lab. Well, the classic black dog name is Blackie, but that's so done. How about, Darko, Gotham, Guinness, Shadow or Vader? How about Jack Black (after the actor), or Black Dog (after the classic rock tune by Led Zeppelin).
Let's try another; your dog's a Great Dane, so you'll be wanting a BIG name. Big Mac, Cromwell, Duplex, Humvee, Magnus, Sumo, all work pretty well. But I'm going to go with Odin, Norse supreme god, which also speaks to the dog's Scandinavian ancestry.
Names for little dogs? No problem; Asterix, Bonsai, Dot Com, Igby, Linus, Newt, Peewee, Sonic and one of my all time favorites, perfect for a ChihuahuaTico Torres (after the drummer of Bon Jovi).
