This usually results in taking the first room found or the only room available regardless of price or location. This is not a way to save money.

Finding a good deal on a hotel room involves planning ahead, checking multiple hotels and taking some time. This can save travelers up to half the price.

The cheapest hotel rates are available during the quietest travel months out of the year for the destination. More travelers means hotels can charge more.

For example, some looking for hotels in Fargo will find better deals in the winter when they do a search for Hotels Fargo compared to the summer when people are taking road trips.

Some hotels even list different rates during the off-season. This is not the case with all hotels, however. Some will try to charge top dollar no matter what season or week it is. Travelers should not always accept this.

Make sure to check both the online rate and the rate over the phone. Sometimes simply calling the hotel reservation desk will result in a cheaper rate. Online prices are made to appear like the best deal when this is not always the case.

Make sure to use up airline points or to present other memberships that offer discounts such as AAA. This often cuts 10 percent off the hotel price.

Sometimes if someone just asks the receptionist for a room at a certain rate, that person will accommodate. For example if the traveler says she is looking for a room for less than $89, the receptionist will likely find a way to make that happen.
