Everyone wants to find good hotel deals, but no one wants to stay in a crummy hotel room

, even if they can only afford a $50 room. The key is to find the best deals and not wait until the last minute to book the room.

Many hotels will offer great deals because filling the rooms at a cheaper rate is better than not filling those rooms at all. It's often best to look for deals on hotels in L.A. and other cities online and then call the hotel's front desk and book the room over the phone mentioning the discount advertised online.

Below are some tips and resources for finding the best hotel deals online. These should help travelers plan ahead and save some money on future trips.

First of all, take advantage of travel sites that help travelers find the best available deals. In many ways, these sites will do all the work.

Next, check out the actual home page of a specific hotel in the area. Too many people do not visit the hotel's web site and instead simply find the number and call the front desk. Don't do this. Instead, explore the site a bit and search for some deals.

Many hotels for example even have an entire page dedicated to specials. There might be a cheaper rate for those traveling mid week, or there might be a packaged deal for travelers attending specific events.

Often hotels will list specials available only by booking online. It is worth checking the site to see if the hotel offers anything like this. Even if this means calling the front desk to confirm availability and rates, it is worth it if it means saving $50.

Hotels usually list other specials on their web sites such as half off appetizers or drink specials. And some offer special couples rates, family rates or a free stay for children 17 and under. These specials are all worth checking out.

Don't forget to compare several hotels in the same area. It is ridiculous how one hotel can be $60 cheaper than the hotel across the street. Most travelers won't even be aware of this because most people just book the first available room they find.

Finally, don't forget to bring up the fact that you are a member of AAA or any other company that offers discounts. Also, when people stay at the same hotel or same chain of hotels every time they travel, some hotel companies think this is worth a free night every now and then. Most travelers are not going to argue with that!
