. I'm here to share with you what I know about interior designers, and especially finding some in Chicago. I think that what I will share with you, is really helpful, and I am happy to share it with you.

Now, it has to be repeated, even though its common knowledge - interior design is not a science! What this means is that each designer has his own set of styles, tastes and ways of working. At the same time, the reason you're getting one is to help you along, in making your home an extension of yourself. The idea is to create a home that's "you". And the interior designer is there to help you achieve this vision. This is one extremely serious choice and decision to make, so please don't hurry it!

My first suggestion would be to go ahead and choose the general style (or art period) that suits you. Some styles cost more than others. Roman style designs I'd say are only practical for wealthy individuals. So you will have to strike a balance between what you like, and what you can afford. That's why the designer is there for you. His function is to guide you along, present the styles, and offer suggestions or alternatives.

A warning... Do not let a designer try to convince you into a design that you don't feel good about. In fact, this is not the designer's job. You already have a design that you like. You just need to see it, in order to recognize it and go "that's what I want!". Do not let a designer try to "teach you" what kind of a design you want or need.

Considering that you're reading an article directed to Chicago residents, there's something else to take into account. Chicago is wroth with fancy, artsy type designers who tend to go far out in their designs. You want to stay away from these people as they will try to convince you to get some crazy design just because its "in", and they don't take no for an answer! So look for people who lead with, and say they prefer timeless designs.
