How To Fix A Toilet
There is nothing more annoying than having a toilet that does not flush properly
, one that leaks, or one that simply never stops dripping, so it is handy to have some knowledge on how to fix your toilet. Of course there are various different mechanisms in use for the modern toilet bowl, but they all work or more or less the same principal and all waste water when they are ill functioning.
To learn how to fix your toilet, the first step is to remove the lid of the tank, hoping that the tank is not situated high up or internally. A normal and modern tank will have a lid that is easy to take off, allowing you to see the basic mechanics of how when you flush, a chain lifts a flapper and empties a tank of water with force into the bowl. As the water drains out, a float drops, and as the tank refills the float will lift up again until the tank is full.
As a cautionary measure, you will also find an overflow that will stop any disasters of overflowing tanks. One common problem with your tank is when the flapper gets stuck, this being very easy to fix by making a few adjustments. Other problems to assess will be if the chain is making the flapper catch or if the flapper is wrongly aligned. A chain can be replaced with dental floss of necessary, and a flapper or ball mechanism can be easily adjusted.
To find out if your toilet is functioning correctly, you need to check that it fills to the correct water line. If the water is low, check the valve is on all the way, if it is, try manually adjusting the level of the float so that it sits at the required water level. Make sure you never increase the water level to more than an inch below the overflow pipe, and before you decide to change the level of the float, make sure that it is not getting stuck on anything.
One of the most annoying problems that you can incur when trying to fix a toilet is a bowl that is constantly filling due to a slow leak from the tank into the bowl. In order to make this diagnosis, drop a few drops of food coloring into the tank and see if they drop into the bowl without flushing. The most common reason for this is a worn rubber flapper that has malformed over time, and thankfully is inexpensive and easy to repair
Another reason why the insides of your toilet are not correctly functioning asides worn or broken parts is the build up of limescale. Descaling your tank with a special solution will only take minutes, and this is a good thing to try before you decide to replace any parts. Take care with products designed for removing limescale; they have a tendency to froth up and can cause abrasion to delicate surfaces.
If however you try all of the above methods and your toilet still refuses to flush and refill as it should, it may be the case that you need to replace the refill assembly. The parts you need are available at most hardware stores, and the job can be done by one person alone.
Learning how to fix a toilet is not difficult, and indeed the basic mechanism is easy to understand. So, if you are sick of a malfunctioning or dripping toilet bowl, lift the top off, diagnose and repair, saving you water and often stopping annoying dripping sounds too.
