How To Fix Laptop Power Problems
Because laptops run off of batteries instead of constantly being connected to an electrical outlet
, they can experience power problems. Laptop power problems can be caused from a wide variety of issues most of which are not difficult to remedy. If you have
IBM Laptop power problems or no power at all, you can perform a series of troubleshooting steps to diagnose the problem.
Things You Will Need
Laptop power cord
Step 1
Check the plug on the AC adapter for the laptop, if it is currently plugged in. Make sure that the LED light on the square plug is lit. Not all AC adapters have a light, but most newer models do. If the light is not on, it means that the laptop power problems are caused by a faulty adapter or the electrical outlet is not working.
Step 2
Push the plug all the way into the electrical outlet to make sure that it is fully inserted. If the laptop power problems persists, unplug the electrical cord and plug it into another outlet to see if this resolves the problem. If the power problem persists, you have a faulty
Toshiba AC adapter.
Step 3
Examine the surface of the laptop to see if the charging light is lit. This light is located either on the front of the laptop or on the inside of the laptop above the keyboard. It usually starts as either red, yellow or orange and changes to green when the laptop is fully charged. If the light is not on at all, then the laptop power problems are being caused by the AC adapter.
Step 4
Look at the back or side of the laptop and make sure that the battery is installed. Some laptops will not start without the battery even if you have the AC adapter plugged in. Refer to your owner's manual for the proper location of the battery and install it if necessary.
Step 5
Leave the
HP AC adapter plugged in to both the laptop and the electrical outlet. Allow the computer battery to charge for two to three hours. Unplug the AC adapter from the laptop and pay special attention to how long it takes the battery indicator level to drop. If the battery indicator level drops quickly, or never refilled at all, you need to replace the laptop battery.
