How To Fix Or Troubleshoot Common Furniture Problems

So you just bought and moved in your new affordable furniture from one of the furniture stores in Orange County

. Or perhaps you have had this furniture for a little while. In either instance, furniture can commonly develop problems, whether it be tears, breaks or any other damage or errors. Sending damaged or broken furniture back to the store can be a hassle, especially if the damage is fixable. Here are a few troubleshooting options you can try before you resort to returning the furniture.

Sometimes, some furniture problems may be due to your own foolhardiness. Perhaps that spacious sofa you loved so much in the store now overwhelms your living room. Instead of opting for a smaller couch, you can create the illusion that the couch is smaller using clever tricks. Put a slipcover over the couch that closely resembles the color of your walls. Make sure to choose a matte slipcover over a shiny cover (unless your walls also have a shiny lacquer on them). Also, if your large couch is also considerably thin, consider adding some cotton filling or batting before slipping the cover onto the couch. If the couch is a sectional couch, you can also consider separating the sections and putting a slipcover over each section.

With used wooden furniture, the wood polish may grow dull, or the wood may end up with water, scuff and heat marks over time. Fortunately, you need not immediately resort to replacing your wood furniture, even if it is cheap and affordable furniture.

Furniture polish may get expensive, so you can go ahead and make your own. There are several methods of making wood polish. For one, you can make polish out of a cup of mineral oil and several drops of lemon oil extract. You can also make polish out of two ounces grated beeswax and five ounces turpentine. The third option is to mix a cup of olive oil with a quarter cup of white vinegar. This latter one should be stored in a plastic spray bottle, while the former two mixtures can be stored in any glass or plastic container.

Pour or spray your homemade mixture into a cloth and work it into the wood with the grain. If the wood still looks unpolished or dry, let it sit until it dries then go over it again with the homemade polish.

For removing water and heat marks, mix pumice and mayonnaise and work in the mixture with the grain. Adding pumice can be used to remove especially difficult marks, such as permanent pen. Yet mayonnaise alone can also be used on water and heat marks. Spread it over the wood and let the mayonnaise soak in overnight.

In the worst case scenario, you may want to consider restoring your old or dry wood, yet before you do so, try this do-it-yourself project. Try using petroleum jelly on the wood, massaging it into the wood and letting it sit for several hours, longer if the wood is in serious condition. Finish it off by wiping with a soft cloth.

If you wish to strip away old varnish or polish, brew two tea bags in boiling water and let it cool. Soak a cloth in the tea, wring it out and smooth it out over the wood. If this method isnt enough, you will likely need a chemical stripping agent, Make sure you read the label and take all necessary safety precautions.
