How To Get A Medical Transcription Job With No Experience

When you start looking at medical transcription jobs

, especially home based jobs, they all seem to want at least two years experience. The only ones offering training appear to be scams. Isn't there a way to get to work and gain the experience you need?

This may not be the answer you want to hear. You're going to need to pay for training through a good school to get around that experience requirement.

A school, not an employer. Never, ever pay a potential employer for "training". The employers who offer training for a cost or claim to offer free training if you just buy their software are scams.

Training is absolutely necessary these days, particularly if you want to do medical transcription at home, as many do. Good quality training will help show that you're ready to work as a medical transcriptionist.

I prefer to recommend online schools. Your local community college or vocational college may well offer a certificate program or Associates degree in medical transcription. But they usually don't have the reputation with potential employers that will help you get that first hard to find job. You are very likely better off going with an online program that has a good reputation.

You can find a good program a few ways. One is to see if potential employers have any preferences for where you get your training. Another is to check the schools you find for AHDI Approval.

Expect to spend 4 months or more learning medical transcription. It's not something you can do in just a few weeks, at least not if you want the skill level that will get you a job. Simply put, it's a lot to learn, not just medical terminology and formatting, but the skill of transcribing itself. That's something that only comes with significant practice.

Some schools are partnered with potential employers. This is a help, as such partnerships help you to get around the requirement that you have experience. But these partnerships are no guarantee that the employers will be hiring at the time you graduate, and they certainly don't guarantee that you learned the skills well enough. That part depends on you.

If the partnered employers aren't hiring, you're going to have to hunt for a job on your own after graduation. Some schools will have job hunting assistance, and you should be certain to take advantage of that, as well as search on your own.

It's not easy to get a medical transcription job with no experience, but good training makes it possible. Put some good effort into your school work once you find the right school, and you might just make it.
