How To Get Rid Of Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are tiny, wingless, oval-shaped, and dark brown or mahogany

. Like mosquitoes, they suck on the blood of humans. Unlike mosquitoes, however, they are not known to transmit diseases. Bed bugs typically feed at night, when their hosts are sleeping. During the day, their small, flattened bodies allow them to reside undetected in beds, furniture, behind paintings, under wallpaper, and in other hiding places.

People usually sleep through the attack, but the next day, wake up to swollen, red, itchy bites. Bites typically occur in clusters of two or three.

Where Do They Come From?

If you have bedbugs, don't feel embarrassed. Unlike other insects, bed bugs are neither drawn to filth nor repelled by cleanliness, and hence can be found in the cleanest of homes. Although bedbugs do not fly, they do crawl quickly and attach themselves tightly onto surfaces. They are easily transported by humans from one location to another, because they are adept at "hitching a ride" on personal items, such as clothing, luggage, boxes, furniture, and mattresses.

How Can I Inspect for Them?

In order to rid your home of the bugs, it is necessary to identify their hiding spots. In less severe infestations, bugs are found solely near the bed. Most will be located in the mattress or frame, or somewhere else that is close to the bed. But when an infestation has become severe, they can be found almost anywhere within a home. Dark spots on bedding or in the carpet are a sign of infestation. A heavy infestation is accompanied by a strong, sweet odor.

How to Get Rid of Them

You will need to clean your sheets, drapes, rugs, carpets, clothes, and pillows. To kill off bed bugs in all stages, you will need to dry all these items on the highest setting possible. Place all other potentially infested items into a sealed bag until you can properly inspect and clean them.

Once you have bagged everything up, you should vacuum your mattress, bed frame, furniture, floors, rugs, carpets, walls, and window frames. Pay careful attention to small spaces and cracks. Once you have finished, wrap the vacuum cleaner bag in a plastic bag and dispose of it immediately. If you have detected the presence of bed bugs in your mattress, you will need to buy a cover to keep the mattress encased in. Any bugs sealed inside the cover will eventually die, although it may take up to a year.

Hiring a Pest Control Service

If you are not comfortable with handling your bed bug infestation on your own, you should seek the services of a licensed pest control professional. Ask for references before you choose a pest control company. It is also a good idea to ask for a quote before choosing companies.
