A computer virus is a software written to perform malicious tasks to your computer. From experience, viruses are written in such a way that they spread themselves, through online media or through storage devices to infect targeted files or file structures.

Examples of what viruses do:

1. Delete files causing programs to stop working

2. Overwrite files causing programs to stop working or work differently

3. Change registry entries - This will cause programs to stop working

4. Crash your computer or cause components to overheat By programming in a never ending loop, the virus can cause the computer to stop down considerably or even damage the component.

Countless viruses have been written with malicious intent over the years. Some viruses could cause little harm, like a virus playing a fart sound for your Windows start up sound clip, or cause huge financial losses, like those that wipe out precious data from Businesses and individuals.

I cannot stress the importance of having a good anti-virus software installed for your protection. An anti-virus software is a program that scans your computer for viruses. A good anti-virus has a team of engineers providing regular updates to virus definitions, keeping your anti-virus software effective against new viruses.

Personally I have used AVG antivirus since 2006 and it has always given me a peace of mind whenever it comes to protection against viruses. Back then I was employed in a company and my role was to help corporations and their employees troubleshoot their computers. The first thing I would do when working on a new computer was to check if he had any antivirus software installed. If not, I would recommend them to get AVG antivirus.

I LOVE AVG because it is effective, provides all round protection and soSO simple to use. More importantly, unlike other anti-virus software I have tried that hogs all the resources, AVG seems to use less resources, leaving more RAM and processor juice for other applications that matter more to me(I hate it when a software I install makes my computer run slower. AVG does not).

AVG has a free version that offers basic protection against viruses, malware and threats. This version is good enough for those who know what they are doing. A seemingly innocent file or link can be a virus in disguise, so do not click unless you are sure!

Remember, there are no second chances if you are affected by a virus. If you lose your precious data, you may never get it back.
