Most often the cause of a fishy smell vaginal odor is the result of a simple condition known as bacterial vaginosis. Because this is an infection that is extremely common in women of childbearing years, it is actually easier to treat than you might think. The first thing to do however is to get an accurate diagnosis to make sure that it is not some more sinister STD. Once you know what you are dealing with, the remedies are quite simple and you probably have the ingredients just lying around your kitchen!
The first home remedy that has proven to be effective is a nice warm bath in warm vinegar water! The reason for the foul fishy smell vaginal odor is, for some unexplained reason, an overabundance of bad bacteria and a lack of the good stuff. It is believed that an acidic environment will help to stabilize the ratio of good to bad which will automatically improve the smell. Another home remedy is to use plain yogurt. It sounds disgusting but it will take the odor away by replenishing friendly flora to the vaginal tract. Some women coat a non scented tampon to keep the yogurt in place.
Actually, eating yogurt is also effective but it takes a bit longer to work. You could find a good probiotic supplement to take daily which will also help. Here again, these remedies will take a few days but will be far safer in the long run than OTC medications that also have side effects. Whatever you do, do NOT use deodorants or vaginal sprays with perfumes as this will just make the condition worse.
