You did your spring cleaning, including the windows, and now you want to update the window treatments with new blinds, shades or the ultimate in window fashion, plantation shutters. Before you start shopping bring correct measurements with you. To ensure accurate measurements, use a high quality, steel tape measure with a blade at least inch wide. Note any obstructions inside your window frame such as locks, crank handles or alarm contacts.

An inside installation is inside the window frame. Measure the width of the exact window frame opening in three places, top, middle and bottom. Use the smallest of these three measurements to the nearest 1/8 of an inch. Measure the exact height of the window in three places, left, middle and right. Use the largest of these three measurements to the nearest 1/8 inch. Now measure the available depth of your window frame. Be careful not to include inside moldings or tracks. Measure only the space available to install your blinds.

A frame installation is on the window frame. Measure the width from edge-to-edge across the top of your window frame to the nearest 1/8 of an inch. Measure the height from the upper edge to the lower edge of your window frame to the nearest 1/8 of an inch. If you have a window sill, measure the depth.

An outside installation is outside the window frame. Across the top of your window frame measure from edge to edge to the nearest 1/8 of an inch. Measure the height from the upper edge to the lower edge of the frame to the nearest 1/8 of an inch. Measure the depth if there is a window sill.
