But when you are broken down in the middle of the night, in a rainstorm, and the top will not rise back up, and the radio is shooting out sparks, life is not so good. You will be wishing you knew car repair.

If you are like most of us, your automobile has become like a second appendage to you, right? You cannot go anywhere, or do anything without it, even when it is smoking, wheezing, and choking out its dieing breath. And when it conks out completely it is like losing your best friend. Well, friend, start treating it better now.

What you want to do is start learning how to take better care of each other. This means you are going to have to learn how to get some grease under you fingernails, and some oil stains on your clothes, so you can start working on and repairing that beauty yourself. The money you save will make it all worthwhile.

Learn the parts on your ride. They are not gizmos and thingies, they are parts. Learn to identify them so that when you need new ones you will not get ripped off. In fact, start going to the local scrap yards, you know the places where they junk vehicles, and buy parts for the cheapest price in town.

If you do have to go to a specialist, stay away form the dealer at all costs. Dealer appointed shops are the most expensive, and the training the mechanics receive is the same as most other places anyways. Find a no name mechanic shop and see what kind of a deal you can make. These guys may be harder to find, but the can also do superb work.

You will meet mechanics that you can know and trust, and you might even make friends with some of them. In that case, a case of beer and a free Saturday afternoon might mean even more help for free. Car people stick together, and they help each other out. See if you can be a friend to them, too, and offer to do some work in return.

The bottom line is simple, if you need to save money on car repair; you are going to have to do it yourself. It will definitely be dirty, greasy, and hard work, but it will always be worth it. You will find that your auto runs better, looks better, and actually is better when you know what is going on under the hood. Do your self a favor and love your automobile. It will love you back.
