How To Give Capstar Flea Control To A Pet Dog
Fleas are agonizing for animals
Fleas are agonizing for animals. They cause insistent itching and make it nearly impossible for the affected dog or cat to get comfortable. Fleas are a problem for both indoor and outdoor pets almost year round and their durable eggs can make them very difficult to get rid of. Capstar flea control products work fairly well against infestations and can usually bring relief in four to six hours.
Before treating a dog with any flea medication, always consult the pet's veterinarian first. Capstar can be obtained without a prescription but your dog's vet should still be notified. The treatment may interfere with your dog's medication or diet and a vet or doctor will be able to tell you whether or not the animal can safely take it.
It can be fairly difficult to get a pet to eat something foreign, especially a dog. So you may have to try a few different ideas before finding one that works. Start by burying the Capstar pill in your dog's food bowl. This is the easiest way since most animals don't look at their bowl when they're eating. After the animal has finished, check to determine whether or not the flea pill was consumed.
If your pet did not eat the flea pill, there are still a few other effective ways to get him to. Such as inserting the Capstar into a treat and feeding it to your pet. The pill could also be wrapped in a piece of turkey or peanut butter and given to your pet too. If the dog finds the capsule or eats around it and coughs it out, there is still one last, less desirable way left.
With your hand or a pill dispenser, place the medicine in the very back of your dog's mouth, preferably on its tongue. Hold your pet's jaw closed until the Capstar pill has been swallowed. You're liable to get bitten and slobbered on, but at least this way you are sure to get the dog to consume the pill.
Regardless of the method you use when administering the flea treatment to the pet, afterwards just make sure that your dog swallowed its pill. These small capsules, as with most other medicines, can get stuck to the sides of the pet's teeth or mouth and most will just spit it out eventually. Once you're positive the helpful treatment has finally been eaten, make a note of the time.
For small and medium sized dogs, the Capstar should take effect in as little as four hours. For larger ones it may take up to six. If twenty four hours go by and you are still noticing fleas on your pet then simply re-administer the Capstar every twenty four hours until they are all dead.
Once your pet has been declared flea free, keep them gone with reputable flea prevention products. Special shampoos and flea collars will help ensure that once Capstar has eliminated the pesky critters, they stay gone. If you live in area with a particularly bad flea problem, consider starting your dog on a monthly prescription flea product to keep him healthy and happy.
