Fortunately, most PCs come with a number of software tools installed that can help you perform regular maintenance on your computer. You can even automate some of these processes, so that the computer will run them all by itself. Some of the tools that may already be installed on your computer include a Disk Defragmenter, Disk Cleanup, and Automatic Software Updates.

Running the Disk Defragmenter on a Windows machine should increase the running speed of the computer. This tool rearranges files stored on the hard disk so that that the space is arranged in a more contiguous. When this is done, programs should run more quickly and files should be saved and accessed faster because less time will be required for the operating system to read and write files to the hard disk.

The Disk Cleanup tool will search for files on the hard drive that can be safely deleted. This helps you easily free up extra space on your hard drive. Some of the files you may want to delete include temporary Internet files, downloaded program files, files in the Recycle Bin, unused components that are not required by the system, and old applications you no longer need.

To keep your computer running efficiently and to ensure that all security leaks are properly patched, you should make sure that your antivirus and operating system files are always up-to-date. You can use Automatic Updates to help you with this. By enabling Automatic Updates, the computer will regularly search and install software updates for you.

If your PC is very slow to start up, you might want to consider modifying the current startup items. The more software programs your PC runs during startup, the more time it will take for everything to load. On a Windows machine, you can change the startup items by going to the Start menu, selecting Run, and typing in MSconfig. You can then use MSconfig to customize your startup programs and processes. Just be sure not to remove any necessary items from the list.

For older PCs, it may be necessary to start thinking about updating and replacing old hardware. You can increase speed by upgrading your processor, the amount of RAM you have installed, and by adding a new hard drive. However, you should always ensure that your new hardware components are compatible with the rest of your hardware, especially the motherboard.

To keep your computer running quickly and to keep it healthy for many years, be sure to perform regular maintenance tasks. If these tasks aren't cutting it anymore, consider hardware upgrades or replacing your computer.
