How To Have A 2nd Dog On A Tie-out

You finally broke down and got a 2nd dog, now what

? There are two big concerns you will have to consider linked to having two dogs. One problem is to have a plan for handling pet waste disposal and the other is finding out the different ways you will get exercise for your dogs Here we'll review the things you need to know about the tie-out in the back when a 2nd dog gets added to the mix.

There are changes when you add a 2nd dog to the mix. Another problem is what to do about having more than one chains in your backyard.

If You Have A 2nd Dog On Chains - There will be two problems to focus on:

A rope getting wrapped around or both of the dogs

Ropes being twisted into knots

Dogs Getting Wrapped In The Tie-out

It's critical that you make a rule that the dogs can't wrestle when they're on the chains. Dogs like to play and wrestle, but when they're on a chain it's way too easy to get something wrapped up. When they are having fun, when something gets wrapped up, it gets very, very taut really, really fast. That is not good. When the dogs are on their chains by themselves you'll still need to watch them occasionally to see if they need to be unwrapped.

Chains Being Tied In Knots

This is one of the biggest problem solvers related to having a 2nd dog. It's called the "twirly thing". OK, that's not what it's really called, but it's what we call it. It's a cool little thing that looks like a figure eight. You should tie two different ropes (one for each dog) to one end of the twirly thing. Using the twirly things means that the dogs can wander around and the ropes don't get twisted. Instead of the chains getting all tangled up, the one end just rotates.

Almost any type of a double leash you get will already hae this included. You can also get these at any hardware store. Get a clip and clip it it to your rope post then tie both ropes to the twirly thing.

You can have a 2nd dog, just know that you need to be aware of how you have them in the tie-outs in the back yard. Two things will help. Don't let them get hurt, and pick up one (or 10) of the twirly things to keep the chains from getting tangled.
