Shopping is a worldwide pastime. Sometimes we do this activity for necessity but more often we actually have fun doing it. The only problem is that we often get carried away and spend more than we can afford. To avoid this problem it is wise to take some steps before you start shopping.

If you know that you are a shopping junkie then own up to it and decide to do something about it. Do not rely on friends or family to bail you out when you go over your budget, decide that you are on your own. Here are some tips to help you enjoy shopping without going overboard and indulge in overspending.

Firstly you should decide on how much you can spend and then take that amount of cash with you. In this way you will not go over your budget. Never take a credit card with you as this is a great temptation to spend more than you should. If you only have a limited amount of cash you know that you cannot spend more.

Put at least 50% of your salary in the bank or if you are shopping online use a debit credit card that is associated with a separate account that you can only use for shopping. Only keep a limited amount in here so that you cannot overspend or borrow from your other account.

Try to put a little savings every month into the shopping account so that when you need to shop you will always have the money and will not have to worry about overspending. This is especially good for seasonal shopping like Christmas. It is also good for buying gifts so that you know exactly how much you can spend.

If you are shopping online it is very important not to spend more than you initially wanted to spend. Shopping is done with a credit card for Internet shopping so you will need to know exactly how much money you will need. It requires some discipline and will power to keep within your budget. However it is worth the initial trouble to not have to face debt problems later.

Make a check list of items you need to get, as this helps you to keep within your limits. When you know what you are buying you will be less tempted to just browse and shop. Once you have bought the items on your check list you can then calculate how much money you have over. With this money you may find that you can buy some extras and have fun getting something that you always wanted.

Some people are compulsive shoppers and if you fall into this category you need to pay heed to these tips. You should only shop when you have money in hand and try not to buy more than you need. Do not buy because it looks nice, but because you really need the item. Shopping can be fun but you will need some will power to buy only what you need.
