How To Heal Following Nasal Surgery

While some people go under the knife for cosmetic reasons

, others make the leap to correct a problem. This could be something that happened due to an accident or an issue that the person has dealt with throughout his or her entire life. Some people receive Lasik eye surgery to correct their vision, for example, while others receive nasal operations to treat a deviated septum or other sinus problems.

If you are considering nasal surgery - or any cosmetic or corrective operation - being prepared is paramount. Knowing what to expect before, after and during your surgery will put your mind at ease and give you the best chances for success.

There are, of course, some instructions your surgeon will want to follow prior to your nasal surgery. These may include a medical exam; surgical consultation; the discontinuation or alteration of certain medications; a fasting period the day prior to surgery; and the mapping out of your post-operative, follow-up appointments.

Your real responsibility comes after the operation when it's time to heal following nasal surgery. Rule number one, always follow your surgeon's instructions. Healing varies among patients, and post-op care follows suit. Depending on the type and severity of your surgery, your recovery instructions will be customized.

Here are some of the things you may be responsible for following nasal surgery:

Directly after your nasal operation, you will feel some pain, swelling and discomfort. Begin or restart your antibiotic regimen immediately.

For the initial recovery period - 12 to 24 hours - keep your head elevated. Also, keep an ice compress over your nose as eyes continuously, or as often as possible.

You will likely have some slight bleeding or oozing, often controlled by a nose drip pad. Change this as often as you feel necessary during initial recovery from nasal surgery.

If your nose was packed with gauze following your operation, it will need to be removed a few days after your surgery. Your doctor will have specific instructions as to how to remove the gauze or nasal sponges. Slight bleeding is not uncommon.

It's important to keep the nasal passages clean following the initial healing period. A combination of Afrin nasal spray and Q-tips soaked in hydrogen peroxide are common cleaning methods. Using an antibiotic ointment is often advised.

Another common healing hurdle is the nose splint. When removed, you will notice swelling and bruising. Many people become discouraged when the splint is removed, but remember, full results can take up to a few months to reveal themselves.

There are several things you want to avoid during recovery after nasal surgery. Do not bend over too far or lift very heavy objects for as long as your surgeon recommends. Do not wear glasses or sunglasses without protecting your healing nose with a splint. Avoid bumping or blowing your nose. Avoid contact sports for as many months as your doctor recommends. In general, treat your nose gingerly until the full recovery period has passed.

Nasal operations can be complicated, but they offer patients relief from aggravating and unhealthy conditions. If you are considering nasal surgery, be open with your surgeon about your concerns and never hesitate to call with questions during recovery.
