How To Holiday On A Budget
Everybody likes a holiday; they relieve stress
, give us a chance to see new places, and are just generally relaxing. Well, thats the theory anyway; in practice, planning a holiday actually involves a number of new stresses and concerns that can be just as taxing as the ones youre trying to get away from.
One of the biggest stresses is paying for the holiday. Especially in this economy, finding money to pay for a trip can be a tricky business, so here are a few tips on how to holiday on a budget.
Bring Your Own Food
Most people on holiday do all their eating at restaurants or through room service at the hotel. This can, not surprisingly, add up quite quickly. One way to substantially reduce the amount of money youre going to spend on holiday is book rooms that have some sort of kitchen facility and either pack your own food or buy it from local markets. You can still eat out, just dont do it for every meal.
Share with Someone
You can often save money by traveling with friends or another family. This can, depending on what kind of holiday youre aiming for, reduce both transportation and room costs. The trick, of course, is to make sure this is someone you actually like spending time with so the trip isnt ruined by friction between you.
Get Off the Beaten Path
Tourist destinations are, by design, set up to extract money from tourists, which means that popular places are going to be far more expensive than less well known places. If youre looking to go to the beach and all youre interested in is sitting by the ocean and not all the other stuff, for instance, its going to be much cheaper to go to a less crowded beach and spend your time there.
Consider Not Going Anywhere
You can spend your holiday at home. This doesnt mean that you just sit around the house and get bored. Every place has things to see and things to do, and the odds are very good that there are loads of activities and sights in your area that youve never really been to. You can have an interesting holiday spending virtually no money and without the added stress of travel.
Be Mindful of Exchange Rates
If you do take your holiday abroad, do some research about exchange rates. You will find that the value of the pound versus other countries currency can make a huge difference in the amount of money you will ultimately spend. Figure out what it is youd like to do on your holiday, rather than where, and then look for the location that will give you the most holiday for your money and go there.
Consider Taking a Holiday at a Friends
If youre like most people, you have friends or family that has moved inconveniently far away. A holiday may be the perfect time to go visit them, and staying with them will make your holiday much, much cheaper.
