How To Identify Rosacea
Rosacea is a skin condition that often impacts people in their middle age
, although it's more commonly found in women rather than men.
Rosacea is often misconstrued as adult acne, as it has somewhat similar appearance and symptoms. However, rosacea is a different condition altogether. While you may experience bumps and blemishes with acne and with rosacea, the latter is commonly identified by the extreme redness that occurs in the face.
Typically, rosacea appears around the centre of the face. Bright and raw looking redness covers the areas of the forehead, down the nose and cheeks and onto the chin as well. People who suffer from this condition often look like they have a circle of red centring their face, with tiny bumps throughout.
It's most commonly found in fairer skinned women, and is generally accepted to be a genetic trait, passed along with by previous generations, much the same as eye colour or stature. However, a family history of this condition is not a guarantee of affliction.
Rosacea may become apparent after the exposure to elemental and environmental triggers. Ultra-violet rays from the sun or sun-tanning beds are often thought to increase the chances of rosacea. Other factors that can accelerate the redness include alcohol, certain medications as well as the chemicals found in many commercial cosmetic products.
The exact cause of rosacea is not yet known, but many believe it can be brought on by certain intestinal bacteria which reacts with a person's hormonal system, causing the skin to brighten and flush. It's also been attributed to demodex mites which live in the hair follicles of the face, blocking glands, causing rosacea.
The best way to determine if you have adult acne or rosacea is to see a dermatologist or other health care provider to be properly diagnosed. Each condition has different treatments to alleviate the symptoms, and improper treatment of rosacea could further increase the problem and aggravate the skin.
