You can alter your screen's resolution from 'Control Panel' inside 'Appearance and Personalization' option by clicking 'Adjust screen resolution'. Once you're done click 'apply'.
There are certain software applications which are not designed for high screen resolution operation, so they might appear blurry if you're running your system with 96 DPI (dots per inch) or above or using the Aero theme of Vista or Windows 7. In such situations if you want to make the text and windows appear clear all you have to do is go to 'Adjust screen resolution' again in 'Appearance and Personalization' menu and there in the left pane you will have to click on 'Set custom text size (DPI)'. There will be option to choose for custom DPI setting. Choose Windows XP style DPI scaling in that and then press OK and your job is done.
If there are some general problems which even your operating system can detect and solve, then it is a good idea to run the Display Quality Troubleshooter. Display Quality Troubleshooter is an inbuilt mechanism which helps you find out the problem in your display and then troubleshoot it for you. Everything happens automatically and your problem, if a small one, gets solved on its own. To access this troubleshooter, you have to type 'troubleshoot' in control panel's search box and then click on troubleshooting. In the left pane click on 'View all' and there you will have option called 'Display Quality'.
