How To Install A Ceiling Fan

Ceiling fans are a simple home improvement project

. They may make your house look better and more comfortable. Do you have a ceiling light in your bedroom? It may not be too difficult to replace it with a ceiling fan. These are tips to make it easier.

Make sure that turn off power from the circuit breaker box. This is very important.

After you remove the old light, you will need to wire up the fan. Attach it to the ceiling box. Many fans have a hook. That is so you can attach the unit while you wire it. Make sure that you follow all instructions that come with the fan. Before you wire the fan, take a look at the wall switch. Does it have two black wires or one black and one white? Two black wires, means power runs from the switch to the light. One of each means, power runs from the ceiling to the switch, and then to the light. This will make a difference in how you hook them up.

Using two black wires

If there are two black wires on the switch, it is easy. The fan will have four wires. They are black, blue, white, and green. Black is the fan motor. Blue is the light kit. White is neutral. Green is ground. Attach black and blue to the black house wire. Attach white to white. Attach green to bare wire. The disadvantage to this hookup is simple. When you turn off the switch, the fan and light will both go off.

Black and white wires.

One black and one white is a loop circuit. It is a bit more complex. If you are unfamiliar with electricity, get help. If you hook a loop circuit up properly, you can control the light with the wall switch. You can control your fan speed with a pull chain. You need to attach the black wire from your fan to the black wire in the ceiling. This wire will be hot when the wall switch is off. You will need to check it. This will keep power to your fan at all times.

Hook your white fan wire to the white power wire. The white switch wire will go to the blue fan wire. The black switch wire will go to the black power wire. Attach the green fan wire to the bare ground wire. This will complete the loop circuit. You can test this to be sure. With power on, carefully turn the wall switch on. There should be full voltage between the blue fan wire and the white power wire. Power should drop to zero, when the wall switch is off. Do not attempt this is you have little electrical knowledge. White and black wires are not normally hooked together. In a few instances, this is allowed.

Finish the installation. Install all ceiling fan blades. Install the new light kit. Check to make sure everything works.
